Course Description
This is a basic/intermediate level course that focuses on lower extremity biomechanics and manual therapy techniques to treat the common knee disorders of anterior knee pain, ACL tear/repair and total knee replacement. There will be significant amounts of lab time so the participants will have plenty of opportunities to practice and get comfortable with the different techniques. Treatment techniques include joint mobilization, taping techniques and therapeutic exercise.
Course Objectives
1. Understand the biomechanics of the lower extremity and how they will effect rehabilitation of the knee
2. Understand the difference between open chain and closed chain biomechanics and exercise and when it is appropriate to use each
3. Properly assess the mobility of the knee joint
4. Properly apply manual therapy techniques to the knee joint
5. Assess and treat anterior knee pain
6. Apply treatment techniques for anterior cruciate ligament injuries
7. Apply treatment techniques for total knee replacements

About the Instructors
John is a Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist since 2004 from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists. He received his M.S. in Physical Therapy from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines, IA. John also has a B.S. in Kinesiology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with an emphasis in athletic training
Mr. Christiansen is currently a partner of Advanced Rehabilitation Clinics, a private physical therapy practice treating orthopedic and sports medicine. He has lectured extensively on various orthopedic topics.
John is the Co-Director of the Healthcare Referral Network for USA Gymnastics, reviewing resumes of healthcare providers who wish to be part of national network of sports medicine providers for USA gymnasts. He has extensive experience as a physical therapist/athletic trainer for USA Gymnastics and the US Olympic Committee and has been the Sports Medicine Team Coordinator for the Illinois Gymnastics Institute Chicago Style Meet, a meet with over 3,000 gymnasts.
J. Patrick Chapman, MS, PT, OCS, ATC, CSCS
Pat received his BS in Physical Therapy, with Honors, from the University of Illinois in Chicago. He has a MS in Sports Medicine from the University of Illinois and a BS in Bioscience/Kinesiology from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. He is a Certified Athletic Trainer; Level 2 Gold Medical Professional TPI; Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist; and is certified in Throwing Mechanics by the National Pitching Association.
Mr. Chapman has lectured on numerous topics in the orthopedic field and is dedicated to advancing the profession of physical therapy through evidence based practice, mentorship and education.
